Martin Simpson

Macclesfield Mottram Village Hall · Mottram St. Andrew

One of England’s most revered folk performers, widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, Martin's interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. His remarkable solo shows are intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving. Martin has been nominated an astounding 32 times in the 18 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - more than any other performer - and has won numerous awards. Martin's new album, Some Kind of Jubilee, is released in September. 50 years on from his first LP this record captures Martin at his absolute best. Recorded at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster studio in Santa Monica and completed in Yorkshire. The album weaves together newly written songs, reimagined traditional material, and fresh interpretations of classics from Simpson’s extensive catalogue. No doubt Martin will be playing some of the songs from the album. Do not miss what promises to be a very special night at Mottram.

Cabbage Patch Pub · Twickenham

Martin Simpson needs little introduction to anyone interested in acoustic music. Unquestionably one of the genre’s most revered musicians, he is equally at home playing English traditional folk, American folk and blues and his own compositions. He is universally acclaimed as a fingerstyle guitarist and slide player and is a fine banjo-picker to boot. In the 18 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, he was nominated 32 times, 13 of those as Musician of the Year, winning the accolade twice. Martin’s latest album, Some Kind of Jubilee, was released in September 2026. After more than half a century as a professional musician, the album bears witness to an artist at the very top of his game. He travels the length and breadth of the UK and beyond, giving rapt audiences passion, sorrow, love, beauty, tragedy and majesty through his playing, and TwickFolk is delighted to welcome him back once again for what promises to be a remarkable and intimate solo performance. When Martin last played for us in 2024, the evening was sold out weeks in advance - early booking advised.
