About this event

Suthering (Julu Irvine and Heg Brignall) are a fearless, queer duo whose emotionally-charged songwriting tackles politics, mental health, feminism and LGBTQ+ rights with warmth, humour, and unshakable honesty. Following years of extensive touring, sold-out headline shows and appearances at major UK festivals, Suthering have earned a reputation as one of the most compelling live acts on the contemporary folk scene. Their performances are built around soaring vocal harmonies, breathtaking moments of a cappella, and an intimate blend of piano, fingerstyle guitar, whistles and flutes that can captivate a festival crowd as effortlessly as they can hold a room in pin-drop silence.Their 2024 album Leave A Light On, produced by Sean Lakeman, marked a bold evolution in sound, weaving pop and indie influences into their folk roots. Hailed by the national press as "absolutely spellbinding", the record combines deeply personal songwriting with modern protest. Lead single Maggie, inspired by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, is a stirring anthem for bodily autonomy and social justice.

Budapest Cafe Orchestra

Arts · Calstock

In 2009 Christian Garrick established the refreshingly unconventional and snappily attired Budapest Café Orchestra (BCO) with the intention to present a broad range of music from all over the world in the most entertaining and fun way. BCO perform all their music from memory. Combined their trademark wit and charm, audiences are left tingling with warmth, delight and amazement. BCO are one of the very busiest acoustic groups for me today playing an average of 75 shows per annum. Since their inception they have recorded one album every year and in January 2025 made their 16th waxing Goulash Supernova. BCO are frequent guests to BBC Radio 3’s In Tune.

A selkie woman comes ashore to dance under moonlight and finds herself caught in the arms of a sailor. Captivated by love, she chooses to stay, surrendering her bond with the ocean for the promise of family life. But what does it really mean to stay? As the years pass, she is tethered to a growing child, weighed down by domestic routine, and slowly estranged from her own wild self. Where once she swam vast oceans, she now migrates between the washing machine, the oven, and the school gate - an unwitting tradwife. Torn between loyalty and longing, depression and quiet rage, our selkie must reckon with the cost of staying and the near-impossibility of leaving. Hilarious, heartfelt and darkly intimate, The Selkie Who Stayed reshapes the classic Selkie myth for the age of consent. The night will open with Tales of Freyja – a collection of stories of the fierce Norse Goddess.

Elizabeth Jane Baldry

Arts · Calstock

We are delighted to welcome the return of the highly accomplished local harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry, for what will be an enchanting concert. As a recitalist, she is well-known for her warm and approachable presentation style. The Bath Chronicle said of her: “It is hard to say just which was more pleasurable – the exquisite playing or the often deliciously outrageous stories of composers’ lives that Elizabeth Jane recounted in between the music.” She performs both nationally and internationally, giving around eighty performances a year from recitals in historic houses or specialist arts cruises to weddings and funerals. She has performed to sold-out audiences in the USA, Italy and France.
