About this event

SoundBox Spring Thing presents: Jack Badcock is on Thursday 13 May 2027 at St Mary's Centre, Chester, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £18.70, including the booking fee.

Jack Badcock is a singer-songwriter and guitarist whose solo material reveals an astute songcraft exploring enormously wide-ranging subjects, delivered with a musical sensitivity, clearly influenced by American folk, funk and soul music, as much as the traditional music of Britain and Ireland - and all served with a healthy dose of storytelling and humour. This will be Jack's debut performance for SoundBox, although many may know him as co-founder and frontman of his multi-award winning, internationally renowned world-folk band, Dallahan. He is a hugely experienced performer, having toured throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, both as a solo act and with Dallahan. Raised in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland and later Yorkshire, England, before moving to Scotland as a teenager, Jack has a split national identity shared between the three countries. A previous finalist in the BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award, his 2021 EP, The Driftwood Project was nominated for Original Work of the Year at the BBC Scots Music Awards. He was invited to write, arrange and perform the prestigious New Voices commission at Celtic Connections in 2022 and, in Autumn 2023, went on tour thr...

We're delighted to have The Wilderness Yet returning to play another SoundBox gig this year. Combining the acclaimed talents of folksinger Rosie Hodgson, traditional fiddler Rowan Piggott, and guitarist-flautist Philippe Barnes, they have earned the esteem of their audiences as consummate musicians and singers. They weave an eclectic tapestry of traditional and original songs, a cappella three-part harmonies to luscious instrumental arrangements. SoundBox presents: Brooks Williams

St Mary's Centre · Chester

"One of the most consistently excellent musicians in roots music." American Roots UK "A guitarist in possession of rich vocal powers and a talent for lyrical imagery" (RnR) "His easy, relaxed manner conceals the greatest level of true expertise.” (Fatea) Statesboro, Georgia-born Brooks Williams has been living in Cambridge, England for nearly 20-years. He has around 35 recordings to his name and has done thousands of gigs over the course of his 35-year career. From Cropredy to Glastonbury, Philadelphia to Winnipeg, Costa del Folk to Shrewsbury, there are very few stages Brooks hasn't played. He moves effortlessly between country, blues and folk. SoundBox Chester audiences have seen Brooks perform in collaboration with banjo guru Dan Walsh, and Vera van Heeringen (just two examples of the numerous duo collaborations of his career), and also in a solo capacity. It’s in that role that we welcome him back again this year. His latest album, Brooks' Acoustic, is one you’ll want to listen to again and again!

Ceitidh Mac

Green Note · London

Ceitidh Mac (pronounced “Katie”, spelled the Gaelic way – think ceilidh with a T) is a Welsh-born, Tyneside-based alternative cellist/singer whose sound is original, absorbing & full of soul. Folk in her subtle observations of people & politics, jazz in her attention to groove & not sticking to the rules of songwriting. Ceitidh Mac makes cello/singing feel like its own genre. Think Arthur Russell who paved the way for cello/singing, Aldous Harding in the beauty of leaving the listener space to find their own meaning in the songs, think Joni Mitchell, alt.folk heroes This is the Kit, jazz political commentator Alabaster dePlume. People who carve their own sound world. Growing up in rural Pembrokeshire before moving to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Ceitidh has worked with Sam Grant (Richard Dawson, Pigsx7) on all her recordings to date. They have built an exciting foundation to continue with a debut record.
