Gigspanner Big Band at The Maltings Ely

The Maltings · Ely

“Their collective elan has a forceful presence unmatched in British folk. A faultless cavalcade” 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Guardian "The kind of re-enchantment which only comes from top-class musicians with a deep understanding of their material. Simply remarkable" 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ R2 Magazine The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force in British folk music... Their high-energy, virtuosic performances appeal equally to traditionalists and to those looking for something more experimental, and they have garnered praise from publications as varied as fRoots, The Telegraph and The Wire, where they were described as ‘melodically folk-rooted yet open and innovative beyond the constraints of genre’. This year has been an extraordinary chapter in Band’s history, with their album Turnstone winning several Folk Album of the Year Awards. Beginning life as a trio - with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight being joined by percussionist Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack - the line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band, with acclaimed multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin - BBC Folk Awards 'Best Duo') and Bellowhead co-founder and...

John Hackett Band

The Maltings · Ely

The John Hackett Band The John Hackett Band embodies the spirit of progressive rock. From John’s pastoral flute textures, through the funky interplay between drummer Duncan Parsons and bassist Jeremy Richardson to the intricacies of Nick Fletcher’s lead guitar the group embrace pop, rock, jazz, classical, funk and all stops in-between, from the tenderest of ballads to hair-raising instrumental workouts! Following the release of acclaimed second album, Red Institution in 2025, JHB celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2026. Their tour of the UK, Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands, thrilled audiences with brand new tracks alongside ‘Classic Hackett’ material from the heyday of progressive rock. John Hackett has been a much-loved and admired figure in the progressive rock scene since the mid-70’s; best-known for his flute work with his brother, former Genesis guitarist, Steve Hackett on albums such as Voyage of The Acolyte, Please Don’t Touch and Spectral Mornings as well as his own solo pieces Checking Out Of London, Another Life and The Piper Plays His Tune. Described by Steve Hackett as “probably the best jazz-rock guitarist in the country”, Nick Fletcher’s reput...

BAGGOTT SMITH & JONES

El Rincon · Bristol

To call this trio a ‘supergroup’ is serious understatement! Mighty keyboardist Jon Baggott is joined by two members of El Rinc regulars Slate Trio: maverick guitar legend Neil Smith and dazzingly brilliant drummer Matt Jones. Between them, their musical CV encompasses Portishead, Massive Attack, Robert Plant, This Is The Kit, The Brackish, Zun Zun Egui, The Liftmen, The Invisible Apples, Free Four, and many others. Expect a choice mix of jazz and groove standards, plus some original compositions, and just general top-class musicianship. As El Jefe would say: “Mint”.
