Kenny Young & the Eggplants

The Bullingdon · Oxford

New York's most entertaining indie band, Kenny Young & the Eggplants make a welcome (but long overdue) return to Oxford - and just in time for their favourite holiday - Halloween! Fresh from 3 nights supporting Tom Robinson in London, they are in the UK to promote the Premiere of their new documentary film. "Before It Was Cool: The Brooklyn Beat from Lauterbach's" features The Eggplants and several other bands from the now-legendary Brooklyn indie scene. So expect a night like no other! Kenny Young will tickle your brain with another selection of his thoughtful, surreal (and annoyingly catchy) songs, while The Eggplants spread their unique brand of physical chaos around him. Here's a few sample tracks about New York life, pizzas, and cyclists that might find a peculiar resonance with an Oxford audience! Eddie's Apartment My Dinner with Elvis Psychopath on the Cycle Path

Love Music Hate Racism presents Electronic Against Hate

The Bullingdon · Oxford

Oxford's Love Music Hate Racism returns to The Bullingdon's main room after their sold out shows last year for this special Electronic Against Hate lineup that features two of the most exciting and provocative female electronic artists based in the UK. Anglo-French avant garde electronic artist Julia-Sophie headlines the main room at The Bullingdon. Her debut album 'forgive too slow' combines traditional songwriting roots with experimental electronica — intimate vocals backed by warm analogue synths and precise drum machines. Influences range from New Wave to folk confessional to house to avant-garde 80s pop. The songs narrate a story of self-destruction, love, and loss. By the end, embers are still burning — but there is a sense of getting closer to something authentic. This promises to be a treat for Oxford music fans already aware of her talent and a joy for those who have not yet had the chance to catch her live show. Esoteric electronic artist Maria Uzor will be performing tracks from her brand new album, 'Fantasyland' and bringing her restless energy to the stage. Her music lands like a pirate broadcast from a distant corner of the galaxy. Inspired by both dark and light,...

Ordinary Giants

Labour Club · Glossop

Ordinary Giants is a song suite by acclaimed songwriter Robb Johnson based on the life and times of his father, Ron Johnson. A family history of the 1930s, the Second World War and the Welfare State — told through songs, spoken word, personal memory and the lives of ordinary people. There are songs and spoken-word pieces about the social realities of the 1930s, the growth of fascism, the experience of the Second World War, the NHS, comprehensive schools, anti-racism and attacks on the Welfare State by the Right. Some of the songs are funny, some are sad, some are love songs and some are political satires.

Betsey Trotwood · London

Welcome one and all to the glorious sound of the Thames Delta, coming at you live and direct from Southend-on-Sea - albeit in the middle of London. First up, garage indie rockers Invaders give forth a sound that is made from 4 cups of estuary mud, a large measurement of swagger and a heavy helping of groove. After a nerve-calming pint or three, you’ll be ready for Permanent Firmament to take the stage - Southend alumni playing songs by the Cusack/Son Of Buff/Adjustment songwriter Lance Baldock, with a sound that sips from the early Fannies, sludgy Neil Young cup with a dollop of indie-powerpop and shades of early Wilco. You’re probably on the spirits by now but Dark Globes bring their melodically driven noise-pop, lo-fi garage rock, and folk-pop infused with gentle psychedelic rock and ringing guitars. Finally - if you are still with us - The Bromides are a London-based (but big in Southend!) alternative noise-pop and garage rock band fronted by singer, guitarist, and Scratchy Records founder Simon Berridge, who also performs as Simon Bromide.
