An evening with Pavey Ark at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Pavey Ark are a cinematic indie-folk band from East Yorkshire Atmospheric vocals, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful orchestral-folk sound that evades immediate comparison. Upon further listening, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves – from the laid back ’60s and ’70s folk of Jackson C. Frank and Love, through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Known for their sublime live shows, Pavey Ark played SXSW Texas in 2025, the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage 2022 and closed Cambridge Folk Festival (Stage 3) in 2023. Huge achievement for an independent act. Pavey Ark’s debut album, Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received excellent reviews from UNCUT, Record Collector, Folk Radio and BBC Radio 6 Music airplay. It was chosen by the BBC as one of their picks for National Album Day in 2022. Their second album, More Time, More Speed, was released in November 2025. The album was mixed by LA based producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Andrew Bird, Teskey Brothers). The band also worked with composer and producer Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) who led the live string quartet stu...

An evening with Luke Jackson at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Canterbury based singer songwriter Luke Jackson has been touring and recording for over 10 years now, steadily developing an enviable reputation for himself in the Folk, Roots, Americana & Acoustic circuits. In addition to the UK, Luke regularly tours across Europe, USA and Canada. Between his debut album ‘More Than Boys’, through to his latest release in 2022, (coincidentally a re-recorded 10th anniversary version of ‘More Than Boys’) 5 records, including a live album were released to high praise and 5* reviews! September 2019 marked his first full solo tour in the USA and his last full length studio album ‘Journals’ was released in November that year to great reviews and was made ‘Album of the Year’ by Fatea Magazine, with R2 Magazine saying ‘Journals’ is an excellent album from a very special singer with a great repertoire, fully confirming his star potential beyond the folk scene’. After going back to both Europe and the USA in early 2020 for another two successful tours., Luke kept himself busy throughout 2020 and engaged with the musical community through a series of themed live stream shows. After a bit of a creative writing surge, released a 7 track EP...

An evening with Paul Armfield at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Paul Armfield is a singer, songwriter, bookseller and lifelong lover of words and songs. Based on the Isle of Wight, he has spent much of his life moving between music and books — a combination that perhaps explains the literary quality of his own songwriting and his fascination with the great storytellers of popular music. With a strong nod to classic English and American songwriters, his songs also draw on the European chanson tradition, with Jacques Brel a particular influence. He has a rare ability to make a song feel like a short story: intimate, observant, sometimes funny and often quietly heartbreaking. Paul has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, building a devoted following along the way. He is equally at home performing his own songs or reinterpreting the work of other writers, bringing the same curiosity and affection to both. His music has attracted some impressive admirers. Guy Garvey, Chris Difford amongst them, with Caitlin Moran describing his music 'As toasty and lovely as Christmas morning' and Mark Radcliffe heaping praise on his 2020 album Domestic: 'I love this so much - sensitive, melodic, hea...

An evening with Dom Glynn & His Sunday Best at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

“What do you get when you have an Englishman from Birmingham, UK, playing the sort of vintage two-steppin' tunes that country’s founding fathers would be proud of? The unique and intriguing sound of Dom Glynn & His Sunday Best.” – Holler Dom Glynn & His Sunday Best is the project of Birmingham-born songwriter and guitarist Dom Glynn, who has spent years immersed in the traditions of classic American country music. In his early twenties, Glynn was already performing extensively in venues across London, developing his craft through countless live shows inspired by his American musical heroes. Through years of dedication, he has developed a songwriting style rooted in the spirit of artists such as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams Sr., alongside guitar work influenced by players like Mississippi John Hurt and Doc Watson. This deep respect for tradition underpins a growing catalogue of original material that feels both timeless and personal. In recent years, Glynn has toured extensively across the UK and Europe, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Ireland. Since 2023, he has been backed by His Sunday Best, an electric band featuring Laurence Kingston (telecaster), Roma...

THE LINDISFARNE STORY

Village Club · Thornton Hough

Thornton Hough Village Club presents THE LINDISFARNE STORY : The Road to Kingdom Come with ex Lindisfarne members Ray Laidlaw & Billy Mitchell. As a founder member of Lindisfarne, Ray Laidlaw was right in the middle of it... even before the band had been thought of. As a young lad with a drum kit and dreams of rock and roll, he set about hooking up with like-minded pals, setting him firmly on a course that would see him achieve success in a band with a #1 album, and a varied life in the music business. Thankfully, he kept all the best bits in a diary: and there's a lot of them, which came in very handy when THE LINDISFARNE STORY was first mooted... Billy Mitchell was also there when it all began. Close friends since the early days of Rock'n'Roll, Billy has never been far from the Lindisfarne action. When the band split temporarily in 1973, he teamed up with founder members Ray, Rod Clements and Si Cowe to form much-missed folk-rockers Jack the Lad. He eventually joined the band at the third time of asking in 1996, fronting the band until it split in 2003. His experience as both an outsider and insider gives a warm, unique perspective to THE LINDISFARNE STORY.
