An evening with Pavey Ark at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Pavey Ark are a cinematic indie-folk band from East Yorkshire Atmospheric vocals, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful orchestral-folk sound that evades immediate comparison. Upon further listening, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves – from the laid back ’60s and ’70s folk of Jackson C. Frank and Love, through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Known for their sublime live shows, Pavey Ark played SXSW Texas in 2025, the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage 2022 and closed Cambridge Folk Festival (Stage 3) in 2023. Huge achievement for an independent act. Pavey Ark’s debut album, Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received excellent reviews from UNCUT, Record Collector, Folk Radio and BBC Radio 6 Music airplay. It was chosen by the BBC as one of their picks for National Album Day in 2022. Their second album, More Time, More Speed, was released in November 2025. The album was mixed by LA based producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Andrew Bird, Teskey Brothers). The band also worked with composer and producer Adrian McNally (The Unthanks) who led the live string quartet stu...

An evening with Paul Armfield at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Paul Armfield is a singer, songwriter, bookseller and lifelong lover of words and songs. Based on the Isle of Wight, he has spent much of his life moving between music and books — a combination that perhaps explains the literary quality of his own songwriting and his fascination with the great storytellers of popular music. With a strong nod to classic English and American songwriters, his songs also draw on the European chanson tradition, with Jacques Brel a particular influence. He has a rare ability to make a song feel like a short story: intimate, observant, sometimes funny and often quietly heartbreaking. Paul has released a string of critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe, building a devoted following along the way. He is equally at home performing his own songs or reinterpreting the work of other writers, bringing the same curiosity and affection to both. His music has attracted some impressive admirers. Guy Garvey, Chris Difford amongst them, with Caitlin Moran describing his music 'As toasty and lovely as Christmas morning' and Mark Radcliffe heaping praise on his 2020 album Domestic: 'I love this so much - sensitive, melodic, hea...

DANA ROBINSON - Songwriter | Americana | Old-Time Richard Dana Robinson was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1961, and raised in the Bay Area of California. His childhood and teen years were infused with the music of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and the popular singer-songwriters of the 70s. Dana took up the guitar at ten years old and began writing songs emulating the sounds he was absorbing. In 1977, Dana spent his sophomore year of high school in London and was exposed to the punk scene and prog rock bands of the time, which became an undercurrent to his attitude and musical style. From 1979 to 1983 Dana hitchhiked relentlessly across the western United States, restless and looking for a place to take root. In 1984 after a summer spent busking around Europe he found a home in Northampton, Massachusetts. Dana took a job cooking at The Iron Horse, an intimate, 100-seat music club. There he witnessed performances from some of the great songwriters and musicians of the time. Artists such as Shawn Colvin, Loudon Wainwright, Bill Staines, Martin Simpson and Doc Watson provided live examples of how one person, armed with a guitar, could move an audience and make...

An evening with Jaz Delorean & Logan Metz at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Jaz Delorean, travelling songwriter, pianist and voice of Tankus, loves to unravel the big stage performance and revisit how songs were originally sketched out, in the solitude of the riverboat he lives on, around a campfire or on a found piano in the recesses of a theatre somewhere on the road. His sound incapsulates a life of movement and obsession with mid-century music & literature, stride piano and balladic storytelling. For years, Delorean has gathered eccentric and captivating musicians and set out on the road to bring the original Tankus sound to countries across the world, playing in cities from New Orleans, to Tirana, and most places in between. A regular fixture at Glastonbury Festival, they have also appeared at Montreux Jazz Festival, Boomtown Fair, Stuttgart and Modena Jazz Open, and WOMAD, to name just a few. Jaz Delorean occasionally releases solo albums and EPs in-between the Tankus catalogue. Logan Metz (Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Willie Nelson) is a songwriter, educator and raconteur based in Wisconsin. His songwriting spans many genres, from jazz and rock to folk and country, but it's all marked by artful chord changes, a character-centric narrative sty...

An evening with Niall McCabe at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Raised on Clare Island off Ireland’s Atlantic coast, Niall McCabe has built a reputation for songs of remarkable emotional depth and humanity. Drawing on the storytelling traditions of Irish folk while embracing the spacious textures of Americana and contemporary acoustic music, his work is carried by a voice that has become instantly recognisable to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Whether writing about fishermen, fathers and sons, strangers, or the idea of home itself, McCabe’s songs are marked by quiet observation, emotional honesty and an enduring sense of place. Following the release of his acclaimed debut album, Rituals, in 2023, McCabe returned two years later with Stranger, a record that broadened both his musical palette and his audience. Traditional Irish instrumentation sits naturally alongside strings, pedal steel and understated band arrangements, creating a sound that feels equally at home in the west of Ireland and the American South. Throughout, however, the focus remains firmly on the songs. Over the past two years, McCabe’s career has gathered remarkable momentum. In 2025 he made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry, toured throughout Britain with the cel...

An evening with Ma Polaine's Great Decline at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Ma Polaine’s Great Decline are an award-winning band praised by MOJO Magazine for their unique blend of pop, folk, blues, and Americana. Ma Polaine’s music resonates as both comfortably familiar and refreshingly innovative, creating a truly engaging experience. With airplay on BBC 6 and BBC Radio 2, and the support of Cerys Matthews, the band's genre-defying charm unfolds through songs that explore the intricacies of human connections, weaving tales of light and dark with uplifting melodies and heartfelt storytelling. Based in Somerset, UK, Ma Polaine have a sound that is their own. Beth and Clinton both grew up with jazz, blues and soul, using those influences and a love for individuality to write songs that are simultaneously dark and light, featuring Beth’s effortlessly distinctive vocals and evocative lyrics, coupled with Clinton’s understated guitar style. Their recent live album release drew this comparison from Fatea magazine: “a cocktail that is one part Beth Gibbons from Portishead, a measure of Holiday edge and one part Rockabilly growl” ********************************************************************************** Please note this ticket price DOES includ...

The Woodgies are Irish sisters Hannah and Meghan Woodger, whose acoustic music blends indie-pop and folk with the innate warmth and intimacy only sibling bands can hope to achieve. Based in Switzerland, they first rose to prominence when their debut album Holding Hands won the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Coup de Cœur award. Since then, they’ve reached millions online with their heartfelt songs performed a cappella with natural reverb - their cover of “Dreams” by The Cranberries has over 13 million views. An evening with Sarah Jane Scouten at Cafe No9

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Working as a songwriter means working at almost everything else: Sarah Jane Scouten has worked mucking out horse stalls, hauling hot chafer trays through Toronto’s TTC for The Weeknd’s music video, pruning tea roses at a 16th century Scottish cottage garden — and serving the early morning shift at The Rex Hotel, Toronto’s historic jazz music venue. Inspired by barflies and misfits, and her own complicated relationship with alcohol, she wrote Alright On My Own. “It’s what my life would be like if I never left the bars in Montreal,” she explains. A line from the song: “This heart’s like a wolf, and this body’s a cage,” became the theme of Sarah Jane’s upcoming LP Heart Like A Wolf. Her latest songwriting is that of a mature musician, road worn but not jaded. Most importantly, it renders the perennial experience of a working songwriter through a woman's hands. Raised in the string band music tradition of western Canada, the same close-knit community that produced Bella White, Pharis and Jason Romero, Le Ren and The Lonesome Ace Stringband, Sarah Jane has been making records since 2010. She now lives in rural Scotland, working part-time as a medical herbalist. H...

Cafe No9 · Sheffield

Singer songwriter Tara MacLean has had an extraordinary music career. From being discovered singing on a BC ferry to touring with Dido, Tom Cochrane and Lilith Fair, her solo albums and those with the band Shaye have touched legions of fans. But she hasn’t, until now, disclosed the details of how the power of song saved her from a childhood filled with danger. From her earliest days in the backwoods of PEI, Tara was surrounded by nature, by the songs of her musician father and by the love of her actor mother. But love was not enough to feed their growing family, nor were the at first Wiccan, then evangelical Christian teachings her parents followed. Poverty and uncertainty were constant companions as were the dangers that began to enter their world. Predators can come in many forms from even the most trusted circles, and Tara soon learned that a young girl is never safe. It was only through Tara’s inner strength and the sanctuary she found in singing and songwriting that she created a refuge and a future for herself. Song of the Sparrow is a daring, heartbreaking and provocative memoir of a life filled with music, told with the same raw, open and elegant poetry that Tara’s fa...
