An Evening with Rebecca Beattie: The Season of Frost and Fire

Field System · Ashburton

We are absolutely delighted to welcome green witch, Wiccan priestess, and author Rebecca Beattie to Field System for an intimate event exploring her latest book, The Season of Frost and Fire: A Witch’s Winter in 13 Rituals. Having stocked Rebecca’s earlier titles—The Wheel of the Year (2022) and The Way Through the Woods (2024)—we are thrilled to host her here in Ashburton to share her wisdom on reconnecting with nature during the dark half of the year. Rebecca will give a talk based on her new book and guide us all in a shared ritual to help us welcome in the winter.

A selkie woman comes ashore to dance under moonlight and finds herself caught in the arms of a sailor. Captivated by love, she chooses to stay, surrendering her bond with the ocean for the promise of family life. But what does it really mean to stay? As the years pass, she is tethered to a growing child, weighed down by domestic routine, and slowly estranged from her own wild self. Where once she swam vast oceans, she now migrates between the washing machine, the oven, and the school gate - an unwitting tradwife. Torn between loyalty and longing, depression and quiet rage, our selkie must reckon with the cost of staying and the near-impossibility of leaving. Hilarious, heartfelt and darkly intimate, The Selkie Who Stayed reshapes the classic Selkie myth for the age of consent. The night will open with Tales of Freyja – a collection of stories of the fierce Norse Goddess.

The Inn Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's Lunatics and Fools

Arts Centre · Ashburton

Madness is a recurring theme in Shakespeare’s plays. There are characters who go mad, characters who pretend to go mad, and characters who try to send others mad. Not to mention Shakespeare’s fools, who may seem bonkers but often speak more sense than anyone else. Modern attitudes to mental health, madness and insanity are very different from those of the 16th century, but Shakespeare’s depictions of people in mental torment is often strikingly recognisable. The Inn Theatre Company has put together a mad, crazy evening of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays on the theme of insanity, Lunatics and Fools. There will be characters you know well, such as Ophelia, Feste and King Lear, alongside some you might not be expecting. So please come and join us. You’ll be surprised, informed, amused, shocked and, above all, entertained. The running time will be around 2 hours including an interval. The Inn Theatre Company draws performers from across south Devon for their productions, which include a week of open-air performances in the idyllic setting of Dartmouth Castle every summer. The success of their recent shows: Heroes, Villains & Lovers and Dreams, Charms & Phantoms has inspired t...
