About this event

The Inn Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's Lunatics and Fools is on Friday 13 November 2026 at Arts Centre, Ashburton, with doors at 19:00. Tickets start at £7.70, including the booking fee.

Madness is a recurring theme in Shakespeare’s plays. There are characters who go mad, characters who pretend to go mad, and characters who try to send others mad. Not to mention Shakespeare’s fools, who may seem bonkers but often speak more sense than anyone else. Modern attitudes to mental health, madness and insanity are very different from those of the 16th century, but Shakespeare’s depictions of people in mental torment is often strikingly recognisable. The Inn Theatre Company has put together a mad, crazy evening of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays on the theme of insanity, Lunatics and Fools. There will be characters you know well, such as Ophelia, Feste and King Lear, alongside some you might not be expecting. So please come and join us. You’ll be surprised, informed, amused, shocked and, above all, entertained. The running time will be around 2 hours including an interval. The Inn Theatre Company draws performers from across south Devon for their productions, which include a week of open-air performances in the idyllic setting of Dartmouth Castle every summer. The success of their recent shows: Heroes, Villains & Lovers and Dreams, Charms & Phantoms has inspired t...

The Brothers Gillespie

Arts Centre · Ashburton

“When The Brothers Gillespie sing, a portal opens. Seeing them perform for the first time felt like I was reminded who I really was…the thread of their ethereal voices weaving a spell around the room. They sing with an ancient wisdom that is entirely for us, now — nothing feels more present. Their beautiful music will open your heart” Johnny Flynn (actor and musician) The songs of Northumbrian folk alchemists The Brothers Gillespie (James and Sam Gillespie) are animated by lyrical poetry, fluid fingerstyle guitar, multi-instrumental musicianship and “the glorious tones of their blood harmony” (Sam Lee). Theirs is a music of encounter, of lark song and crow call, ash leaves and hidden ways. It is rooted in the earth and arises most strongly for them when they are out walking in the borderlands with their packs and instruments. Bringing together visionary mythopoetics with a radical spirit, the brothers tread an older path whilst singing with fierce tenderness to the present time in its grief and luminosity. Their live performances are known for a rare intimacy and the spontaneous ways they weave tales around the songs and invite audiences into the heart of the music. In...

The Linton Duo presents Beau Soir

Arts Centre · Ashburton

Johann Sebastian Bach Sonata for violin and keyboard no.3 in E major, BWV 1016 Lili Boulanger Nocturne and Cortège D'un matin de printemps Claude Debussy Violin Sonata in G minor L 140 for violin and piano Amy Beach Romance César Franck Violin Sonata in A Major This concert takes us from one of the most exquisitely beautiful pieces of Bach to the world of the French Impressionists at the point their music enters the avant garde. Lili Boulanger accomplished much in her short life and her salon pieces are some of the last compositions in her hand before she was overtaken with illness and death. Her impulsive D'un Matin du Printemps is deceptively simple and shares many characteristics with the mercurial violin sonata by Debussy. Amy Beach's rich Romance leads us to .one of the finest violin sonatas ever written: César Franck navigates the heights of musical drama and searing intensity in this wedding gift for Ysaye and despite the notoriously demanding piano part, the players must ride the storm of intense musical dialogue with true virtuosity. Martyn Joseph

Arts Centre · Ashburton

Take everything you think you know about singer songwriters and rip it up. For one man and a guitar he creates a performance with a huge far-reaching sound that is energetic, compelling, and passionate. Be it to two hundred people or twenty thousand, he blows the crowd away night after night. After being signed to Sony Music in the early 1990s, for whom he recorded 2 albums and achieved Top 40 chart success, Martyn became a trailblazer for independent musicians. He launched his own record label in 1999 forging a successful career using the internet, ahead of many other artists. In November 2025 he released his 28th studio album, Troubled Horses, in Martyn’s own words, “I wanted to create a record that felt up-close and personal, songs that are sitting right next to you, on the edge of too close for comfort.” It’s an album of haunting, elegiac songs, acoustically-recorded pared-back lo-fi snapshots. In 2024 he was invited by BBC Radio 2 for a second time to write a song as part of their brand new award winning 21st Century Folk project, penning and performing Chapel Porth Beach, to mark the 200th Anniversary of the RNLI. This was following on from the success of his 2023 tra...

A selkie woman comes ashore to dance under moonlight and finds herself caught in the arms of a sailor. Captivated by love, she chooses to stay, surrendering her bond with the ocean for the promise of family life. But what does it really mean to stay? As the years pass, she is tethered to a growing child, weighed down by domestic routine, and slowly estranged from her own wild self. Where once she swam vast oceans, she now migrates between the washing machine, the oven, and the school gate - an unwitting tradwife. Torn between loyalty and longing, depression and quiet rage, our selkie must reckon with the cost of staying and the near-impossibility of leaving. Hilarious, heartfelt and darkly intimate, The Selkie Who Stayed reshapes the classic Selkie myth for the age of consent. The night will open with Tales of Freyja – a collection of stories of the fierce Norse Goddess.
