Bilingual Poetry Bridge - Mr Kaneko Live

Curio Bookshop · Oxford

Join us on Saturday morning for a special haiku poetry reading, live from Tokyo! Japanese poet and artist Mr Takao Kaneko is releasing his first English language chapbook, 'Wisdom for Life', translated by Dr Laurence Mann, and will be joining us via video link to share some of his work (complete with English language translation). This will be one of Mr Kaneko's first UK performances, and you are invited to celebrate at our free bilingual poetry event. Mr Kaneko's fusion of haiku and illustration gives voice to his unique perspectives on the things that matter in life. His poetry crosses a spectrum between the observational, the quirky and the profound, and is also influenced by his status as a person with a disability. As Artistic Director Naomi Wakao states, he 'does not write about disability. He writes about the business of being human'. With the support of non profit organisation Art of the Rough Diamonds and The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, Mr Kaneko will share his haiku with our audience and then join the moderators in conversation.

Cock and Hoop · Nottingham

A double bill of puppet madness. Starting with Leon’s Alien gameshow. Ever wondered why Aliens visit earth? They love bingo and Leon wants to play bingo with you. You may also get a chance to spin the wheel of fate and could end up playing Alien erection hoopla. Come along and you may win a prize. But don’t worry everyone gets to claim a free badge at the end. Next a short interlude from Liz, the creator of this unhinged world, then we crank up the weird till the roof comes off with we have Slightly Psychic Cynthia, my late grandmother who reads palms, minds and anything else she can get her hands on. Cynthia will amaze you with how wrong she can be and how badly she can read minds. This is a show for adults who refuse to grow up! Disclaimer - if you are puppet phobic please don’t come, this show may scar you for life!

Low Effort Sketches: We Have A Problem (WIP)

Cock and Hoop · Nottingham

Multi award-winning sketch duo Low Effort Sketches presents a new show which, confusingly, is not entirely a sketch show and might even feature some effort! In this show, Alice Wickersham and Andy Bucks play the role of two astronauts preparing for a highly dangerous space mission. With the launch imminent, Andy starts feeling the pressure and goes AWOL. Alice is left to go through the final checks while dealing with a variety of unhelpful buffoons who risk scuppering the mission, including a traffic warden intent on clamping the rocket, the (very forgetful) official space chaplain, and Andy’s Mum. Will the crew ever make it to space? ‘Hilarious’ (Chortle), fourth-wall breaking sketch comedy with ‘a fantastic sense of surreal mischief’ (Spectator). ‘A masterclass in sketch comedy’ ★★★★.5 (The Tab). ‘Beautifully crafted.’ ★★★★.5 (The Reviews Hub).
